Emerging Female Figure - 2021

‘Emerging Female Figure’ was last exhibited at the pop-up exhibition ‘Come As You Are’ in London, 2021.
This found canvas, handmade by my mother, Artist Clare Brice Betts, was the starting point and inspiration for the painting ‘Emerging Female Figure’.
Tucked away in my late grandmother's attic, this irregular handmade canvas with its rough, and naturally aged texture immediately sparked my inspiration to create an abstract moving figure. I enjoyed layering the paint with a pallet knife to create additional textures on the surface. I also used my hands and a spoon to smudge and blur the paint to suggest shade and tone.
I loved the combination of overlaying modern acrylics with the act of making tactile marks on this old surface.
