Context
  • ‘Artichoke study’

  • Autumn dries the artichokes heart.
  • As the pale green and purple thistles turn to pale umber and deep orange. The outer leaves begin to curl and cradle the golden brush of its centre. Winter freezes the delicate flower and leaves behind silver and blue droplets on its fragile surface.
  • The still life of two artichokes, painted with impasto technique on linen, describes the tactile and intricate thistle.
‘Artichokes study’, began with a still life, I reworked the canvas over several days, building the painting out of the canvas as a three-dimensional sculpture.
This painting represents my initial tactile responses from handling the thistle.
